Golf tournament brings newspapers into classrooms – Columbia Basin Herald: Golf

MOSES LAKE – Spots still remain open for the Columbia BasinHerald’s Newspapers in Education Golf Classic.

The event, hosted by the Coeur d’Alene Golf and Spa Resort, startsSunday.

Event Coordinator Tom Hinde has openings for individual players andhole sponsorship, he said.

The cost for individual players is $175 per player or $700 for afour-person team. People can sponsor a hole for $1,000. The priceincludes tournament fees for four golfers and two newspaperrecognition ads.

All of the money from the event goes to the Columbia Basin Herald’sNewspapers in Education program. The program provides newspapers tomore than 75 classrooms in the Columbia Basin last year, Hindesaid. The newspapers are provided without charge.

“This program plays a role in educating our young people andpreparing them to become more informed citizens,” Hinde said.

The program promotes literacy and gives students a link to analyzeevents and ideas and build awareness of local, national and globalevents, Hinde said. he pointed out newspapers are an excellenteducational tool and teachers contact them every year to ask forclassroom copies.

Teachers provide the newspaper feedback on the usefulness of theprogram every year. he noted several letters the paper hadreceived, including two from Moses Lake and Quincy. Both lettersnoted the paper helps teach children literacy and English.

Registration for the fourth annual tournament starts at 10 a.m. Thepractice range opens at the same time with unlimited warm-up andsports massage. a golf clinic, hosted by PGA teaching professionalOwen McClain starts at 11:45 a.m.

“Owen is the teaching professional at the Moses Lake Golf Club,”Hinde said. “The $175 per golfer is all inclusive. it coverseverything for the golfer, forecaddie service … the watershuttle, the golf clinic, the complimentary Coeur d’Alene resortgolf bag tag, practice balls.”

The driving range at the resort is unique, he said. Golfers hitfloating golf balls into the lake.

The tournament starts at 1 p.m. and is a four-person scrambleformat, Hinde said. The format allows all the golfers on a team todrive from the tee. The team captain selects the best drive and allof the player, except for the person whose shot was used, hit theirnext shot from the spot.

“The rating of the golf course for golfers is really, reallysomething special,” Hinde said, pointing out it was ranked by GolfDigest and Golf World magazines.

The event closes with a barbecue at 5 p.m., with awards, prizes andcontests being given at 5:30 p.m.

“You won’t be disappointed as our tournament will be bigger andbetter than ever,” Hinde stated. “(The) tournament will feature arecord number of hole contests.”
